Citizenship is another optional subject at the primary level, introducing pupils to debating, critical thinking, politics, and law.

KS1 Tests and Assessments

At the end of Year 1, pupils undertake a phonics skills assessment by reading 40 words to their teacher, including both real and made-up words. This test evaluates their reading and pronunciation abilities, and children who require additional support with reading can retake the test at the end of Year 2.

At the end of Year 2, all children are required to take national tests, designed to resemble ordinary class tests rather than high-stress exams.

KEY STAGE 3 (LOWER HIGH SCHOOL)

Key Stage

ages of 11 and 14 in the first 3 years of secondary school. It sets out
the subject areas covered and also how pupils are tested and the standard they
should achieve.

Key
Stage 3 (KS3) is a crucial part of your child’s education, spanning ages 11 to
14, and the first three years of secondary school. During KS3, students
transition from primary to secondary education.

How Does
the Transition to Secondary School Impact Children?

The shift
from KS2 to KS3 signifies not only a change in educational stages but
also a change of schools from primary to secondary. This transition can
be a challenging experience for both students and parents, as it introduces
them to new environments, teachers, and peers.

Which
Subjects Are Covered in KS3?

The National Curriculum mandates specific subjects for secondary school students in state-funded local authority-maintained schools. These include three core
subjects (maths, science, and English) and nine foundation subjects:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Modern foreign languages
  • Art and design
  • Music
  • Design and technology

Religious education is also a part of the National Curriculum, covering various religions. However, parents can choose to exclude their children from these lessons if they object to their child learning about different religious beliefs. All state-maintained schools are required to teach sex and relationship education, but parents can opt out of these lessons if they wish.
